Ask An Advocate: Intro to Restorative Justice: Reimagining Current Justice
April 6, 2023 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
Currently, the criminal legal system is the only systemic accountability mechanism available for victims/survivors of sexual violence. In recent years, advocates and organizers have started reimagining the current system by wondering whether principles of restorative justice might be applied in the aftermath of sexual violence. In this session, I will talk about the basics of restorative justice, and I will go over some of the findings of a brand-new local research project conducted by Michele Braley of Seward Longfellow Restorative Justice and Dr. Katie Querna of St Cloud State University. We’ll discuss some of the exciting possibilities, as well as some of the limitations and barriers. I will also talk about the work of the Restorative Justice/Gender Based Violence working group I am a part of. Finally, I will talk about the differences between a restorative justice and transformative justice approach. Once I go over the basics, we will open it up to a discussion. I want to hear your thoughts! This is a complex set of topics, and I am not an expert, so we will just be skimming the surface. I hope you’ll join me.
Trancsription will be provided through the Zoom platform.
